DUMP presents DUMP01, a group exhibition of works by 26 artists, predominantly London-based. These artists are at various stages of their careers and share a relationship with materials caught in a state of liminality - artworks discarded or on the verge of disposal due to circumstances such as studio closures, relocation, or creative shifts.
Responding to an open call issued by DUMP in July same year, DUMP01 stages these works without alteration, offering them temporary reprieve and storage while raising questions around the cycles of value, material circulation, and artistic permanence. The initiative reflects on precarious conditions faced by contemporary artists, echoing findings from a 2023 Acme survey that reported "one in three UK artists doubt they will be able to continue to work professionally in five years' time."
Rather than seeking resolution through transformation, DUMP positions itself as a space for collective inquiry and alternative archiving. These staged works resist definitive categorization, existing instead as part of an evolving narrative around creative labor, survival, and the forces shaping what is remembered or discarded in contemporary art practice. This exhibition also marks the establishment of an archival framework, supported by a partnership with 远方速递 homeward express, which secures storage solutions for the works beyond the limits of the show itself.
During the opening of the exhibition, DUMP01 also was able to facilitate two workshops by participating artists:
WORKSHOP1: Space is THE precious thing in London. Delivered by artists Hannah Imhof and Dou Dou. A writing and performance workshop exploring individual experiences within limited space in London for living, working and storing.
WORKSHOP2 : Scavenging Scoundrels delivered by Odie-grace Kalu and Jack Milner. Through a multimedia creative journey, this workshop will blur the line between the digital and physical. Participants please remember to bring a found object to this workshop!
