In the summer of 2024, DUMP was invited to host a panel discussion within a central London construction site - a space marked by transition. The event was conceived as part of our ongoing interest in spaces that embody both precariousness and possibility. Engaging artists and curators, the conversation explored how art is produced, stored, and transformed in the face of material, spatial, and institutional limitations.
This collaboration aligned with DUMP’s ethos of investigating the conditions that shape contemporary artistic survival. By situating the discussion in an unfinished, liminal environment, we aimed to foreground the realities faced by early stage and emerging practitioners navigating the pressures of unstable infrastructure and self-initiated production. Themes such as community-building after graduation, the repurposing of materials in artistic practice, and the creative negotiations with unconventional spaces were central to the discourse.
Through these discussions, DUMP reaffirmed its mission to expose the hidden labor of art-making while advocating for alternative, community-led solutions to structural challenges in the art world. This event reinforced the need to reflect critically on the environments we create, inhabit, and transform as artists and curators.
